It is unlikely that you or someone you know has not experienced an ankle sprain. Whether you’re an athlete or an active individual, an ankle sprain can be debilitating. A sprain happens when a ligament is overstretched beyond its limits. This stretching effect damages the elasticity of the ligament causing it to lengthen past its normal means or can cause a possible tear when stretched too far. Common signs of an ankle sprain are the inability to put weight on the foot, swelling, bruising, sensitivity to touch, increased range of motion, and pain.
The best thing to do if you have the above symptoms is the RICE protocol. RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate the ankle. This protocol should be started as soon as possible because of how fast the swelling can set in. When there is a lot of swelling in the ankle, the range of motion is hindered and the pain increases. An ankle sprain can general take longer to heal when there is a great deal of swelling, as it can get trapped in the joint. That is why at the Complete Performance Center we recommend all our patients with ankle sprains to start RICE and come in to get an evaluation. Studies have shown that a chiropractic adjustment can help restore the proprioception of the ankle, especially in chronic ankle sprains.
RICE protocol is a good jump start towards your road of recovery. If you or someone you know is struggling on their road to recovery from an ankle sprain feel free to contact us at the Complete Performance Center.
